| partners | | Randy and I stayed at Rustler Park, and after a lazy morning, we hiked up the Crest Trail toward the junction with Fly Peak to see if we could get a look at the smoke and/or fire from the Horseshoe fire near Portal. We did see some smoke, but surprisingly little and no flames. The night before we talked to a group staying at the forest service guard station and found that they were were volunteer trail clean-up crews. They mentioned the trail from Long Park up to the Crest Trail was closed although they also said that no one was enforcing this. Good for us, since we came back on the Long Park trail and road - and there were no signs anywhere on the Crest Trail talking about the closures. The signs that I saw were at Long Park and on the Long Park Road. Later during this day we talked to the lookout at Barfoot and she figured that they just didn't want anyone camping at Long Park while the fire was still active. Fire update today said that the fire should be contained by June 15. |
