Another great little getaway to my favorite place to be: New Mexico. This one was more about exploring than hiking. Primary focus was the Gila National Forest on the north side of the Gila Wilderness. This was only the second time I had ventured up Bursum Road to Mogollon and beyond, the first was with my mom 20 years ago for a two night camp at Snow Lake. On my way in I stopped to get dinner at the Purple Onion Cafe, which some of my hiking friends swear by. Turns out the green chile hamburger was very good. Not the best in the state for sure, but a solid contender! Be advised that the cafe is normally open only Friday-Sunday.

One of my prized possessions is a copy of the little book "Tales From the Bloated Goat," a collection of stories about Mogollon's past by H.A. Hoover (1958). Mr. Hoover first came to the area in 1904. He passed away in 1958. The Bloated Goat Saloon was a watering hole in the mining camp long ago. When I stopped at the Purple Onion for dinner, I mentioned the book to the woman preparing my meal, and she told me she had heard of it, but hadn't seen it. Guess it has been out of print for a long time.

Mogollon is an old mining camp that had its start back in the 1890s when gold and silver were found in profitable quantities. It is located in Silver Creek Canyon about 12 miles northeast of Glenwood. The main mine for the area was the Little Fanny, which even after its heyday, hung on until the 1950s.

These days Mogollon serves as one of the gateways to the northern part of the Gila Wilderness.

Since it had been so long since I was back there, it was like a new adventure! After camping for a couple of nights further in, I decided to stop and take some pictures of this old town on my way out, plus take a short side trip over to Cooney's Tomb just to the north near Alma.
Sure glad the gas station in Alma was open! :)
