Cindy was along, so she was happy to bag two fire lookouts (Sugar Loaf and Barfoot). This was a no fee weekend in the Coronado NF, so I wasn't sure how crowded it might be, but was pleasantly surprised by the relatively few people. After being driven out by a bear 20 years ago, it was nice to once again camp at spot number 11, this time without incident! Early June is just about the perfect time of year to catch the lupine and iris putting on their dominant performance.
My original plan was to hike the Crest Trail south all the way to Anita Park, then hit Centella Point on the way back for a possible view of the Horseshoe Fire, but after being somewhat discouraged from hiking that far by the trail crew we encountered, we decided on just going out to Flys Peak junction. We then hiked back via the Long Park road. Even at 9000 feet it was plenty warm in exposed areas at midday. After lunch and a slow breakdown of camp, we drove over to Barfoot Park to look around. Along the way we stopped to hike up to the lookout. It was there that we finally got to see the part of the range where the fire was active. Fortunately it was being very tame at the time.
I had also planned on a short hike over to Barfoot Peak, but since it was so warm and we had lost our ambition, we figured it was time to head on down the mountain and face the heat. And it indeed was hot by the time we rolled into Willcox! |
