History:The Deer Creek -(Gowan Camp) First, The newer map shows the Gowan Camp a little over one mile from the FR.201 trailhead on trail #45 but on older maps the place where is currently called the Gowan Camp they used to call it the Windsor Camp I'm not sure when or how it was changed perhaps to throw the attention off of the real Gowan property which is really on the South fork trail #46 perhaps or just an input error somehow, here is a site where you can cross reference maps.http://www.mindat.org/maps.php?id=133094 .also http://mapper.acme.com/
Hike:Their are two ways to hike this trail,1. From the FR.201 Trailhead, top to bottom, 5500Ft.to 4600Ft. this is a short hike a little over a mile 1.04. Walking down you'll see a change from Tall pine to scrub, it was much cooler than the lower trail head which is just south of the Rye area only a few mile north but much lower in elavation 3000Ft. 2. From the Trailhead at the intersection of Hwy 87/188,Highway mile post 235* This trail is much more of an adventure, from close to 3000Ft. to 4600Ft. (or 4400 if you elect to go all the way alittle over 8.5 miles, the first 3-4 miles are pretty gentle, heading north to the south edge of Deer Creek where you'll see the old Deeer Creek windmill which was knocked down by a falling tree, you will then head west wind along the creek until you come to the Gowan grave site, shortly after that the trail heads more south/southwest and shortly after that the trail becomes hard to follow because of a huge recent rain storm last January 2010, just follow the wash up,there is many miles of rock hopping ahead, this trip is nice because you go from the desert to the the tall pines if you go all the way, the Gowan/Windsor camp is about 7.5 miles from the trailhead I saw manys signs of Bear,Deer,Elk, many different birds, lizards snakes etc. Loved it !
