| no partners | | Wanted to do something new and different so I made the long drive out to this one. The trail climbing up was alright, nothing too spectacular. Chatted with the fire lookout for a minute or two and then took in the views, which were quite nice. You can see the North Rim, of course, but it isn't much to look at really. The real treat is taking the side trail out southern end of the flat-top summit. The San Francisco Volcanic Field is spread out in front of you, with the broad, flat, monotonous expanse of the Coconino Plateau surrounding. You can basically see all the major summits, Elden, Fremont and Doyle being the exceptions. There are some nice flat basalt rocks to sit on and take it in. The wildflowers were nice, lots of red and yellow. The penstemon were phenomenal. Obviously above average rain out here. Speaking of which, lots of water erosion is present on FR340 coming in. It's still passable by passenger car, but it's very bumpy. FR320 is fine however, as is FR340A (the spur to the TH). |
