Asbestos Point had been on my to do list for several years, and I finally had time to do it on the tail end of a Sierra Ancha campout. I parked at the foundations near the bottom of FR 489, and began my hike up Pocket Creek. The hike was quite scenic, with tall pines, lush firs, and plenty of water cascading down Pocket Creek.

The road became quite steep, narrow, and very eroded in the upper 5000 foot range, and I was quite glad I had not tried to drive this road, as I would be walking home, for sure. Reaching the saddle overlook at the end of FR 489, I turned left to explore that road. Then it was off to see the asbestos mines. I climbed into the rusty old machine that sat in a quarry along the way, then I explored several of the tunnels, and got to see asbestos veins in the rock.

I was not too concerned with going into the mines, as my geology textbook had a lengthy article on asbestos, claiming that of the 3 types of asbestos, only one type was linked to cancer, and chrysotile (the only form of asbestos that occurs in Arizona) was not it. Nonetheless, I did not linger long in the mines.

Now it was time to get up Asbestos Point itself. After some searching, I was able to find the right road. I followed it to its end, then I scrambled up a few hundred yards to the tiny little summit of Asbestos Point. I took a break, sent a SPOT message, then headed back down, as the sun would be setting soon. I moved quickly, and was back to my truck just before dark. It was a great afternoon of exploration, and a perfect way to conclude a fun weekend in my beloved Sierra Ancha.
