| no partners | | After eyeballing Picketpost Mountain for some time now, i finally decided to make a summit trip happen. From the trail head the mountain looks unclimbable but once you reach the base of the mountain you can see a steep rocky ravine crawling up the northern face. The trail is steep and slippery but also very manageable. After close to 2 hours of climbing we reached the summit. I personally don't think there is a better place to get a 360 view of the desert and surrounding mountains, including Weavers Needle, Superstitions, Apache Leap... We trekked around the entire top checking out the different cliff faces and views. The journey down is quite interesting. Lots of loose gravel and slippery trails makes it interesting. It is very easy to loose the trail on the descend but after stopping, looking around and backtracking a couple feet you will notice the spray painted dots marking the trail. For me the hike down was more tiring than the trek up, due to steadying your legs to keep from slipping. After 4.5 hours we made it back to the truck and headed home. Truly amazing hike that i think any desert lover should experience.
Quick note: I would be skeptical of this hike during snake season. The rocky landscape with foot tall grass at the summit seems to me like perfect rattler terrain and would hate to climb up a rock and come face to face with one. I'm not sure if there are any around there but just a thought. |
