My intentions were to check out the condition of the lower trailhead road, and to locate exactly where the Ash Creek Trail departs from it. For those that are interested, the Ash Creek Trail leaves the road at 32.76431 N, -109.87041 W, elevation 4638 feet. The road itself (in my opinion anyway) is 2wd high clearance until it crosses Ash Creek at around the 4200 foot contour. From there, it's 4wd high clearance (not too bad, just a short steep section with loose rocks). The road hiking was a bit warm (I can't imagine hiking it in summer ), but Ash Creek itself was ice cold. The oak trees, running water, and huge mountains near the end of the road were a great combination. I look forward to hiking up to Oak Flat one of these days. |
