I explored the Sierra Estrellas with a buddy of mine back in early March. Living in Ahwatukee for five years, I decided to try the Estrellas, especially since they were so close to home. What a decision! We thought it was one of the best hikes in the Phoenix area. It is amazing how South Mountain looks so small. The last 2-3 miles of road has some deep sandy spots. We had a four wheel drive, and I would recommend at least a high clearance vehicle.
