Wildflowers are still hanging on, and I got started early enough to see a lot of wildlife in Garden Valley, including cardinals, quail, rabbits, and something vaguely stoat-like with a red coat disappearing into the underbrush. I missed the turnoff for Hackberry Springs, though; I wound up taking Second Water Trail to where it dead-ends into Boulder Canyon Trail. From there I hiked north about an hour to a saddle with a view of Canyon Lake, then turned around and retraced my steps to the First Water Trailhead.
(No pedometer, so I'm guessing wildly at the mileage above.)
