We started at a little after 11 from the Horse Lot and walked to the First Water Trailhead to take the Garden Valley Loop Snakemarks and others had talked about so fondly. I thot we would do the Garden Valley Loop as a first hike in this area so that we could get the lay of the land for future hikes in the area.

We immediately like the hike as we followed the instructions and easily marked trail up to the intersection of the 2nd Water and Black Mesa Trail. The trail was loaded with people coming back including several large groups. However, once we got to the junction, there were minimal amount of hikers.

In fact, we didn't see anyone else except for a group of 3 women that we ended finishing the hike with. One of the girls is a frequent hiker in the Superstitions and she knew how to complete the loop back to the First Water Trailhead so we asked if we could follow along. Little did we know the guide was hiking like it was a step aerobics class but we decided to keep up so that we could complete the loop rather than going back the way we came. I had to do power photo-taking on this part of the hike but we'll be back to take it at our pace. (We will probably take the Horse Lot route to Hackberry to Garden Valley to Second Water.)

From Hackberry we took the Horse Lot route along and then over the creek, heading west up a steep path to a saddle. From there the trail is pretty easy to follow until you come to a wash intersection. The correct choice back to the Horse Lot is to stay in the wash by turning west (right) and from there you really can't go wrong.

Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.
