I intended to do Upper First Water, but when I got to the trail head, the parking lot was FULL! Not one space left. On a Thursday?! WTF? So much for solitude. I drove back to the horse lot where there were several trucks and two ginormous trailers full of horses and people all over the place trying to get on them. I have never seen this much action out here. I hiked out right from the corner of the lot. Didn't really know where I was gonna go. I just figured if I saw people, I would go the other way.

I had just reached First Water and was pondering right or left when I saw a group of maybe 5 people coming, so I stepped off to the side to let them pass and decided I would go wherever they came from. Right behind them were many more in a 10 minute parade of 35 - 40 people, all in this group. That explains the parking lot. One woman asked me how to get to First Water. I said they were standing in it. I asked if they were parked at the FW trailhead and one man answered, "I don't know... I've never been here before." Brilliant. I point them in that direction and head the other way.

I didn't see anyone else until I was well past the spring. I had climbed up the bank quite a ways to investigate a cave like thing when I saw 2 men and a woman (middle aged) stumbling through the creek below (they missed the handy trail on the right and they didn't see me). They were moving at snail speed and this woman was swearing like a sailor, tripping over the rocks and snagging her 'outfit' on catclaw. She broke a nail and I thought she was gonna kill her husband over it. He thought so, too, because he kept telling the other man (who was trying to escape ahead) to stay with them. He responded, "Why?" The husband said, "Because I might need you." Yeah, as a witness! This was hilarious.

I ended up doing a longer version of this hike and I only saw 2 other people the rest of the day. A surprisingly entertaining and enjoyable afternoon!
