I was originally planning on going up Tanque Verde Ridge with Joel this weekend, but he said it would likely be a dry camp, so I decided on doing a little easier hike with water. I talked to Wendy and she said she had a group going on Saturday from Romero Pools to Sycamore Reservoir, so I figured I could meet up with her group and hang out with them for the night near the reservoir. I didn't get started until the early afternoon, but made it down to the reservoir from Gordon Hirabayashi in record time. I ran into a group of about 30 Southern Arizona Hiking Club peeps at the saddle - they had just completed a trip to The Thimble.
I hung out at the reservoir and waited. I read a book, and made myself a drink. A friend had made my libation decision easier when a jumbo flask of Cuervo 1800 ended up in my hands a couple days prior. I mixed it with lemon-lime Gatorade and made a modified margarita (wastin' the day away in margaritaville ). A group of boy scouts eventually came by the reservoir, but no Wendy. I waited until around 5:30 PM until I decided that it was time for me to find camp.
Oh, boy! My first solo backpack! I ambled down the trail for about a mile, and found a nice out-of-the-way spot under a big tree. I made camp and found some firewood before dark, then made the fire and started supper when the super-moon decided to make its appearance. I drank the rest of my Gatorade and tequila, and read my book near the fire. What a fantastic way to spend an evening. Backpackers midnight came and went, and I finally made it to my tent at around 10 PM.
The next morning, I packed up and made my way out. I successfully made it through my first solo backpacking experience with no ill effects. I think this is something I could get used to...
Interesting thing: I didn't use any more water than what I carried. The water in the creek smelled a little nasty and I didn't need it, so I didn't filter from there. So this was essentially a dry-camp for me - something else I totally had no intention of experiencing. |
