The Forest Service actually sent a crew in and marked and moved the trail to higher ground. Real easy to follow with giant cairns. We go to the bear canyon trail and go south to an overlook right before the trail descends deeply into the canyon. Off to the west on the rim is a great stopping /turn around spot with a fantastic view. The total distance out and back to this spot is 10 miles and most of the elevation change is climbing out of sycamore canyon back to the prison camp. There is usually water in the stream and don't forget to take the small hike out to see the dam holding up the silted in reservoir. |
