Just about every year, my family plans a trip up to Colorado for hiking, beer, and whatever else there is in Colorado. I decided to drive up again this year, stopping in Utah for some camping before heading out to Lake Dillon. Janelle had told me of some camping off of Highway 128 just north of Moab, so I figured I'd stop in there. She'd said that there were so many campgrounds that it would be impossible for them to all fill up. However, since I was getting in after midnight on a Friday night, the impossible had happened. All sites were full, at least for the first ten miles. And I was ridiculously tired and just wanted to sleep.

There's no camping allowed anywhere along 128, unless it's at a designated site. I'd noticed a car earlier at what looked like a trailhead, so decided to drive back and spend the night in my Subi tent. This proved to be a bit serendipitous, as when I awoke at 5:30 the next morning, I saw my fellow "car" camper getting ready for the day with his crash pad sitting nearby. Just beyond his car were several boulders with white chalk spots on them. I'd only just grabbed my crash pad on a whim as I left town, so was really excited that I'd actually be able to use it.

I talked with the other climber for a short minute, then headed off to where he said some easy V0-V2's were. Since I only had a pad and no spotter (he had to go to work), I decided just to do a couple easy routes. It wasn't until the Mushroom Boulder that I actually topped out, however. Because of how overhung the route was, it was very difficult to top out over the pad. I attempted it twice and then decided to inch a bit to the right and top out about ten feet off the ground, no pad below. It felt good to just go for it, and I was proud of myself for believing that I could do it and just committing to the moves. I played around for a little longer on a couple other routes, but decided that I'd gotten my accomplishment for the day and headed out to continue my journey to Colorado.
