| no partners | | My buddy Darren and I headed down to Hell's Hole with the goal to find the waterfall featured in Robert Stieve's AZ Highways Hiking Guide. Darren has been down there before and this was my first trip.
We left Phx around 7am on Saturday morning and made the long drive through Globe. We reached the trailhead around 9:15 and found the parking lot packed with cars. We parked off to the side and headed in thinking there was no chance we'd secure one of the few campsites along the creek. To our surprise about 1.5 miles in we came to a large volunteer trail crew that were rerouting a portion of the trail. We chatted for a few minutes and continued on. They informed us there was one small group ahead of us and that was it.
The remaining hike in was quick and we reached Workman Creek and snatched up one of the campsites. We set up camp and then set out to find Robert Stieve's waterfall. A few hundred yards down canyon we came to a waterfall that was running at a trickle. It's definitely not the one in the guidebook. We continued on and followed cairns down the canyon. We did not get far as the "trail" becomes overgrown and you have to bushwhack. After some very frustrating trial and error, we grew bored and bloody and then turned around.
Once back at camp we made dinner and then lit a very modest camp fire. We had a great group of people at the camp next to us. Their party split into two groups. A couple of them hiked the same trail as us. The other three took the Canyoneer Route down Salome Creek. They were expected back around 6pm but didn't stumble into camp till 9pm. Luckily we had the fire going and they hung out for a bit as they warmed up. They were good company.
To circle back to the waterfall, take a look at Robert Stieve's book Arizona Highways Hiking Guide. On page 111 & 112, they have some pictures of a waterfall in Hell's Hole. I believe this waterfall is actually in Salome Creek and is not reachable by hiking. Although it's possible there could be another route to it but I doubt it. I believe the only way to reach it is by Canyoneering down Salome Creek. Maybe someone else will have more info. |
