Got there around 4:00 - nobody else there.
The creek is very low, but still has a trickling flow through this area ... enough to sustain a healthy population of animals, at least. In the creek I saw fish, frogs, and crayfish. Along the banks I saw several raptors, a great blue heron, great horned owl, verdins, woodpeckers, lizards, one tiny garter snake, a family of javelinas (who's splashes, thrashes, and grunts accompanied me downstream for quite awhile), many white-winged doves enjoying the saguaro fruits, and my first (of the year)family of quails with a bunch of babies.
At a break in the shade along the creek at 5:30, my thermometer read 90 degrees - very tolerable.
After looking for saguaro fruits to eat the whole trip, I finally found some at the very end that were ripe, reachable, and not already eaten ... ate one on the spot and took two for later.
Nice visit to one of my favorite Phoenix area spots. |
