| partners | | Started with AndreyP at about 6:45am. The trail is mostly smooth and not too rocky most of the way. There are a few rocky spots, including along the roads, but not too bad. Saw more mountain bikers than hikers on this hike. Outside the Spur Cross Ranch area the Maricopa trail is marked fairly well except for one spot where it appear a Maricopa Trail sign was appropriated. It is apparent that the trail leaves the road at this point, and a post is still in the spot where the sign was removed, giving most semi-intelligent hikers enough of a clue on which way to go.
At the point where my GPS odometer said 7.8 miles, we got to a 3-way junction where the Maricopa Trail was marked all three ways (???). we decided to sit and have lunch there, and soon Sun Ray showed up. If you go left at this junction, you go to the Go John Trail. If you go right, you go along the future loop alignment of the Maricopa Trail to anthem. The section to the Go John Trail is apparently a spur off the main loop.
Sun Ray decided to hike with us for about a mile on our way back, making him my 35th hiking partner from HAZ in only a little over 3 years. Wow.
We only saw some more hikers once we got within a couple miles of the Spur Cross TH. We took the Dragonfly Trail back to the TH, making our total mileage for the day at 15.3. This hike seemed to take much less of a toll on my body than the Skull Mesa Loop did 3 weeks ago. The condition of the trails and less elevation gain probably contributed to this a lot. |
