| partners | | I met Outdoor Lover (Pam) at the HAZ Summer Fest campsite on Friday. Later that afternoon she decided to go fishing at Knoll Lake. I asked if I could tag along since I wanted to see the lake and wanted to check out fishing opportunities. Although a dedicated trout fisherman in Oregon I had pretty much given up on that sport when I moved to AZ in May. However through the HAZ web site I have been seeing some opportunities here. Maybe I shouldn't have sold off so much of my trout fishing gear in that garage sale before we left OR.
After a high speed white knuckle drive down gravel forest roads in Pam's Ford Escape we arrived at Knoll Lake (OK, I exagerate. I'm an old duffer who likes to put along forest roads at a leisurely pace). It was nearing dusk, an ideal time to catch the early evening bite. I tried to give Pam some advice on choice of lures based on a lifetime of trout fishing experience but she chose to ignore me. I suspect that doesn't surprise anyone who knows Pam. On our way down the shore line Pam asked a fisherman if he was having any luck - the answer was no. At this point I was not optimistic - Pam ignored my lure advice and the locals weren't catching fish.
We arrived at a rocky point after a scramble along a very steep and rocky shore line - Pam was insistent that this was a good place to fish. On about the forth cast with a flashy and obviously not trout worthy spinner, Pam caught her first fish. At this point I began to realize maybe she actually knew what she was doing. Another fish about 20 minutes later confirmed it. On the way back to the car we passed the same fisherman we had seen earlier. Pam again asked him if he was having any luck. When he answered no she asked him if there was a fish cleaning station nearby - Way to rub it in, Pam! |
