This was a hike up the Houston Brothers Trail from Pinchot Cabin to the Barbershop Trail and then along the Barbershop Trail to the Buck Spring Cabins. On Saturday morning of the HAZ Summer Fest the HAZ members were informally dividing up into groups for hiking the many nearby trails. I decided to hike this route with Chumley and Julia Chaos - a distance of about 10 miles. We set off in Chumley's Toyota Tacoma for our starting point at the Pinchot Cabin - a high speed drive down gravel forest roads and including some rather rough unmaintained back roads. :scared: I wasn't sure Chumley knew where he was going but we got to our destination. :) Liz who was riding in the back seat and is prone to motion sickness was turning green and about ready to up-chuck by the time we got to the trailhead. This was my second experience in two days with HAZ member forest road driving.

The Houston Brothers trail has a gently grade and we made good time over the approximately 5 miles to its intersection with the Barbershop trail. At Aspen Springs we encountered a family resting on the Paige's Crossing bridge. I learned that Chumley had restored part of the log stable after it collapsed about three years ago under a heavy snow fall. 8) After leaving Aspen Springs we encountered HAZ members Joe Bartels, Coanbru and Coreyprator on their way around the East Cabin Loop.

The hike got more strenuous on the Barbershop trail with its up and downs through at least 5 canyons. I was really dragging my rear on the uphill sections but Chumley and Liz were patient enough to wait for me at the top of each hill. Allthough strenuous, this is a beautiful trail through canyons and ridge tops. After another five miles we arrived back at the Buck Spring Cabins and the campsite for the HAZ Summer Fest. I drove Chumley back to the Pinchot Cabin trailhead to retrieve his car as dusk approached. We saw several elk including a majestic large bull cross the road on our drive to the trailhead. A great ending to our hike.
