| no partners | | Fall is coming! I stepped out of my car at the trailhead, and that special feeling was in the air. The aspen had also just begun changing color with the cooler night-time temperatures.
Started up the trail in great spirits, determined not to get rained out this time. Trail Canyon Trail serves as a short cut to North Loop, which then heads to Mt Charleston, so I headed toward Charleston after a quick snack at the T. Still hungry after not eating enough during yesterday's bike ride.
North Loop was incredible! Instead of hiking across endless meadows with obstructed views like South Loop, here you hike across the side slopes and along the cliff line with expensive views. The trail slowly climbs up to the main ridgeline, circling toward Mt Charleston, which is visible off-and-on. Many of the side slopes are subject to frequent avalanche activity, and covered mainly with aspen and snags. This makes for prime viewing and photo ops. Admittedly, the boot-width trail is not for those with a fear of heights, as there are many stretches with a vertical cliff rising above on one side, and a steep scree slope or cliff below.
I slowly meandered along, soaking in the views, until it hit me that I was supposed to be home by 5pm for the football game. Time to book it back to the trailhead!
A few brittlebush and thistles still flowering here and there. Fall colors should continue to improve. |
