Started out up Trail Canyon Trail, then headed toward Mt Charleston on North Loop. Didn't really start out knowing if I intended to summit, but did so in the end. Not nearly the number of people on trail I expected given the beautiful weather.
This is the way to summit Mt Charleston for sure. Expansive views almost the entire hike to both sides of the Spring Mountains. Wonderful, exposed geology and wind-swept bristlecone forests. It doesn't get much better than that.
The last push to the summit is like many above-tree-line summit pushes - not pleasant. It is more severe from this side than from South Loop, but the rest of the trail more than makes up for it.
A few birds, a curious chipmunk, and some lizards were my main companions. Until I met a very talkative gentleman at the summit. He had a summer job surveying the campgrounds here in the early 70s and it was his first time back. It was interesting to hear his stories.
Good hike! |

Autumn Foliage Observation Moderate The aspen down lower are still in nice color, but the higher ones have had their leaves mostly blown off. It smells like autumn! |

Dripping |
| | More than dripping - trickling out of the pipe. Trough about 1/2 full with plenty of yellow jackets. | | _____________________
