Currently reading "Landscape of the Spirits - Hohokam Rock Art at South Mountain Park" by Todd Bostwick and Peter Krocek. Armed with some of their "inside" information, set out on a hike along the Holbert Trail with our desert puppy - Skippy.
Found plenty of rock art along the trail. Most is weathered and deteriorated relative to some of the other "cluster" sites I've visited lately. Disappointed by the amount of modern rock art (read: graffiti & tagging) and modern pot shards (read: broken beer bottles) also found at this site.
Climbed to Dobbins Lookout, then trekked on to N. Buena Vista Rd. Also located Box Canyon that is signed "Area Closed". Too bad, Bostwick's book indicates 242 rock art panels in that canyon. Wonder what it takes to gain access?
Had GPS with me and will forward route to Joe for posting.
TH elevation = 1322 ft
Max elevation = 2189 ft @ N. Buena Vista Rd.
Elevation gain = 867 ft
4.12 mile round trip
1.71 miles (one way) to Dobbins Lookout |
