Also, after the last few days of rain we hoped to encounter some running water. Plenty of puddles right away, but heading out on the Second Water Trail when we reached the wash at First Water Creek it was bone dry!?? I believe some of the flow goes underground at that point, because near the end of our hike we saw water flow upstream.
Just after turning onto Black Mesa Trail eagle-eye Tracey found a few potsherds that appeared to have washed onto the trail with the last rain. After a glance in the direction the water flow would have come from, we decided to climb up to the mesa itself to see if we could find anything up there. Well, we climbed up there and followed the ridge for some distance south but found nothing so eventually dropped back down onto the trail and followed it the rest of the way back.
Although in the mid-40's with a breeze when we started and maybe 10 degrees warmer with little wind on the return, it was a perfect day for a leisurely hike in the Supes. |
