| partners | | I had time for a morning hike and with temps under 100 why not the Supes? Denny and I met David and Ryan at the First Water Trailhead about 5:30a and started hiking at first light. We hiked in the Dutchman trail an were planning on a modified version of the Black Mesa Loop. The first detour was the confluence of West and East Boulder canyons. We looked around for signs of the arrastra that was once in be in the area. Denny found some old bones from a horse or cow and there was a very flat area that was previously used a s a camp but no sure signs. From there we took West Boulder creek back to Black Mesa trail. We hiked on Black Mesa trail toward Yellow Peak and the guys with the brains decided to simply complete the Black Mesa Loop. Me and the turtle took off up the shady side of Yellow Peak. Yep we pretty much went straight up it. Once on Yellow peak there was a larger area than I imagined and the views of the surrounding mountains and mesa is great. After a few photo ops we decided and to angle back to Black Mesa trail. No, we never learn. The going was too bad but the off trail terrain slowed the pace. I came across a stake in the rock fall with the names of two the Utah hikers that were found out there. I assume it is a memorial. While it seemed we were wandering the GPS track showed we made a fairly straight line back to Black Mesa trail. It was swarm at the finish but still a good day of Supesploration. Nice to meet David and Ryan and thanks to Denny for following me into the unknown. |
