1st trip
had this combo loop in mind for a few weeks
got an abnormally late start, as one of my omaha brothers was passing through and spent the night, taking off after breakfast at the brass rail
still wanted to do it, so did the math on mileage, time, sunset and temps
my estimate of 23 miles was pretty close, and i would have to keep moving
knew i could bail out halfway if i needed to
apple = check
cashew clusters = check
had the bivy and headlamp just in case
took 100 oz. of water and drank it all
started hiking at 11:08 and finished at 6:43
did not deduct my 11 minutes of non-moving time, as it was just bits and pieces for pictures, battery change, outhouse, retying shoes, etc
started at first water trailhead
dutchman - hadn't been on the mile or so past the bull pass intersection
forgot how often the trail crosses a stream bed
great views of boulder canyon, palomino mountain and aylor's arch
peralta - hadn't been on the section beyond fremont saddle
views were good, trail was okay
a nice climb up to fremont saddle
saw a thin snake out of the corner of my eye slithering off the trail and into the grass
didn't investigate :scared:
bluff spring - nice climb up cardiac hill
great views of barkley basin and the rock formations
water standing in bark's canyon, and in any creek or stream i crossed
terrapin - this trail was completely new to me
i liked the initial part, hiking on the slickrock
some different views, especially of weaver's needle
didn't care for the rocky, scree-filled descent
back on dutchman - the mile or so below black top mesa was new to me, too
black mesa - now back on familiar ground, as i've done this loop several times but not for several years
second water - easy cruise back to first water
almost dusk, and just enjoyed the long shadows, fresh air and the sound of the birds
good long hike, made it back before sunset (barely)
think i overestimated how much daylight i would have, but all went well and the timing worked out fine
along the way, there was plenty of brittlebush, globemallow and cactus blooming
saw quite a few folks on dutchman, lots on peralta, a few on bluff springs, and then absolutely no one from terrapin on
had to be a little more on task than i would prefer for a superstitions hike
