I've wanted to tackle this trail for a while now. Got to the trail head at 7:30 AM, I was the only car there. My dashboard thermometer said wit was 38 degrees out....chilly! About 2 minutes into the hike I heard the unmistakable sound of wild burros...thought to myself, this was going to be a great hike. The trail dropped into Cottonwood Creek...which still showed some autumn colors. I was surprised to find frost all along the trail until about 9 o'clock. Met up with a about a half-dozen cows between the trailhead and the beginning of the Big Jim trailhead. Tons of rocks and boulders, beautifully painted with lichen along the entire length of the trail. I counted about 12 Wild Burros keeping an eye on me throughout the day. The trail is pretty level the entire time with a few hill-climbs. All and all a pretty good hike, took me about 5 hours to complete going 2.5 miles-per-hour (avg.) with plenty of breaks and lunch. Lots of Cholla so keep an eye out if you bring a dog.
