| partners | | Decided to get an early start on Quartz Peak by camping in Rainbow Valley the night before. Ok, so there was no early start anyway. But it's a cool area. We camped adjacent to a small rock feature near what the topo maps indicate was an old mining prospect. It was fun doing some light bouldering and scrambling near camp. The views across the Sonoran Desert NM were great, and the few signs of civilization to the north were not at all bothersome.
On the way to the Quartz Peak TH, we stopped at what is left of Rainbow Rancho, a former landing strip and "airport" ranch that used to have a bunch of planes and apparently an unfriendly sign to visitors. From what I can gather, it was between 2005 and 2007 that the airport/ranch stopped operation, and most of what's left has either collapsed or been used for target practice since then. |
