My last hike in the Supers this Winter/Spring - heading to the San Juans. Picked this one again & glad that I did, as 2nd Time was a charm : )
Would like to do it as a loop down Carney next season, as coming down on the scree is not most of my friends bag. Glad that I had Fido with me today. She rocked, litereally!!
We took the standard route, not via Balanced Rock, and it was quite warm with an 8:30am start.... there was some scrambling and rock climbing that was difficult for my husky, so we had to find routes around - which we did ;)
As we were getting quite high, it was getting pretty hot, so we decided to head down a bit and sit in the shade for lunch. I was concerned about my husky overheating, so thought this was a decision point for us. Got quite a bit under our belts already and didn't want to chance it. Well, as we were having our lunch - the weather Gods appeared and provided cloud cover - :y: I decided that it was o.k. for us to proceed. Continued our scrambling up the steep South side of Superstition Peak - fun, fun, fun! I did have a little cairnage (sniglet) -- when grabbing a rock that wasn't stable, it tumbled into my forearm and gave it a little slice - no biggy. We continued up until the sun peaked through again and we were very close to the ridgeline. I knew that Merlot (my husky) couldn't climb to the Peak & I had been there before; so decided that why push her -- we took some pics and headed on back. The hike back is not for the scree-phobic. Take a different route for sure. There was quite a bit to deal with on the steep downhill.
All in all an awesome hike, but definitely not for all. Must like to scramble and handle scree, both uphill and downhill. My dog & I went through 3 1/2 Liters of water and a small gatorade.
Would love to get some of my rugged CO friends to do this one next year :GB:
