| partners | | This was are second section of the General Crook Trail.Bruce has researched it and came up with 140 miles(+-) of the trail between Ft.Whipple at Ft.Apache.This is the sections the Boy Scouts retraced in the 70's.The first part of this section is through the town of Camp Verde and on highway 260.Except for the cool Fort Verde State Park your on roadsides for 5-6 miles.Luckily I had Bruce to converse with .The section through Clear Creek campground is cool.As soon as you climb out of the creek it feels like your on the old supply route. We started seeing chevrons,General Crook Trail signs, and carins and that makes us feel more in toon with the trail.I agree with Bruce that it would be cool to meet some of the scouts that help preserve this route 40 years ago.It got a little warm in the middle of this section but we had a slight breeze.Bruce had set us up two cache spots so that helped too.The views got better as we climbed and the rolling hills and scattered juniper were nice. The temps started back down and clouds moved in to make the last few miles pretty nice.Almost to the end of this section and we spot a few Elk.As we drop down towards one of about 5-6 water tanks we had seen on this trip the Elk began to trot. That's when re realized there were more than a few. They seemed to spread out for a half mile and numberd 100(+-). . The open terrian let us see more of them altogether which was quite impressive.Turned out to be a fun day.Great Hike,Weather, and company. Thanks Bruce!
Side note:Bruce's vision was keen today.
Side note:Bruce made it home to watch Michigan win! |
