| partners | | Another day out on the General Crook Trail for the Turtle and the Eagle. After 3 hours of shuttle setup, we were hiking just east of Forrest Lakes at V80 on the General Crook. Long pants, long shirt and gloves were in order for the first 45 minutes or so. Temps were in the low 40's, but the wind made it a bit nippy.
We both figured out quickly that we were hiking during deer season. A few shots in the am, RV's and trailers were scattered throughout the hike. Just about every time we saw a truck on the road they asked if we'd seen any deer.
We took a little longer than expected in the first mile, loosing the trail a few times. This section is either on or close to FR300 for the first 15 miles. The hike mainly follows a ridge in and out of Ponderosa that were spared from the Rodeo-Chediski fire of 2002. The views in numerous areas were endless.
We saw a band of 5 wild horses at one point that was pretty intense. It was pretty easy to tell which was the dominant male. We were snorted at more than a few times before they took off. Other fauna spotted on this hike were a dozen or so quick moving deer, numerous tarantulas, one elk that lost playing chicken with a van, and two elk that were made recently bodyless.
History lessons on the hike included the graves of three that were hung in 1888 (The actual day is unclear) http://hikearizona.com/photo=369622
Also enjoyed the Phoenix Park area. http://hikearizona.com/photo=369635
Another long day on the trail with the last 45 minutes behind the headlamp. Thanks Denny for another fun day out there. |
