| no partners | | Thanks to Evie Bella Chl for posting the wildflower report for this trail. I've never been here before, but based on the report I thought I'd give it a try, hoping the flowers were still prolific. I wasn't disappointed and the description of the trail above the river was very helpful.
As I was signing in at the trailhead, I thought I passed Azpride and friend, but since the last time I saw him was the HAZ Hart Prairie event, I wasn't sure. But when I left the trail, I paid more attention to the log and there he was. I can't wait to see his photos.
You could call this trail "Butterfly Heaven". As I walked down the wash, checkerspots, blues, sulphurs, pipestem swallowtails, mourning cloaks, bordered patch, a queen, and fritillaries flew all around me. It was just like going to the botanical garden--but without the entry fee!
The petroglyph panel is impressive and the river was deep. Later in the day I cooled my feet in the water. Around the bend and over some boulders, I found the upper trail. The flowers were substantial and I spent the next couple hours taking photos of the globe mallow, chia, milkweed, poppies, chicory, groundsel, fleabane, brittlebush, verbena, paintbrush, fairy duster, claret cup, wiry lotus, scorpionweed, ocotillo and a few I'm not familiar with.
This might be a good place to come back to when the cacti bloom. There were saguaro, barrel, claret cup, pincushions and probably more.
It's a bird paradise, too: heron, phainopepla, sparrows, and a yellow one that was so quick I couldn't identify it.
Now is the time for this hike. I'm coming back in my truck to explore the backroad and the ruins up on top. |
