In the morning, headed back towards the Grand Plaza because wife wanted to see the Saturday market they hold there. Happened to wander through the Place des Martyrs, a square dedicated to those who died in the 1830 Belgian Revolution. (Wherein Belgium seceded from the Netherlands, setting the stage for ongoing Flemish-Walloon tensions.) Finally found the Grand Place, but there was no market as the plaza was instead set up for a weekend-long jazz festival. Had a breakfast of Belgian waffles , watched some Chinese tourists -- there are a lot of them in Europe -- take a couple dozen photos of their breakfast , then marvelled at the plaza's beautiful architecture.
In the afternoon, we hooked up with my ROTC buddies, and their daughter, and they took us on another walking tour of the area, including an amazing beer shop where I scored a bottle of Westvleteren 8 / blue cap, which is almost impossible to get in the USA. (And then requires a healthy outlay of dead presidents.) We eventually wandered down to St. Catherine's Place where we watched a cool Czech duo named "DVA" -- different show, but I remember them playing this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bO2Mkt7s3W8 -- which kind of reminded me of the Sugarcubes, then had dinner in what my friends called one of the few authentic Belgian restaurants left in Brussels. |
