| no partners | | I did this as a lasso loop. The trail starts off in solid waist high grass from all the recent rain. I didn't hike the first part of the trail going up cause I couldn't find it. After about ten minutes of cluelessness I whipped out the GPS and got headed in the right direction.
Several water troughs are passed on the way up. Once past the tall grass the trail is more defined and easy to follow. Though it still appears to be rarely if ever used.
From a distance the fire appears to have wiped out the entire mountain. Good news being there's a good swath of mostly healthy forest in the upper reaches. I couldn't believe it and figure this is what the Four Peaks area looked like before 1996. The saddle isn't a high point thing where you can look down both sides. It sure was nice to take a break in pine shade!!!
The jaunt to the peak is a bushwhack, good news being it's pine shade for the most part. I found a nice big boulder to take a nap on. I woke up to something running through the woods but never saw it. Considering I couldn't run through the manzanita chocked forest I figure it was either really small or really friggen big...lol
The top is scorched and it's quickly washing away too. The views from the top are fair at best cause it's really more of a mesa on top and you can't see anything. I continued on to a lower point that had some sweet views. Not wanting to return through the manzanita I had this brilliant idea to head straight down. Maybe a quarter mile down I fell about ten feet. It pretty much winded me and I decided to take a ravine down instead. As with most ravines the going is slow as can be. Even though I started off with a 50 SPF sunscreen I was out much longer than anticipated and got scorched. By the time I ended the hike I looked like a coal miner from the soot of the recent fire. It was a GREAT hike! |
