Government shutdown - our Park is closed? Cool - good time to escape the first few days of madness! :D
My friend and I headed off for our first visit to Havasupai in great spirits, not worried about what we would return to.
Got a late start after the long drive ... really enjoyed the cruise through the Hualapai Indian Reservation. Changed clothes and strapped on the packs, then departed the Hilltop.
Followed a blood trail much of the way down from a poor unfortunate horse or mule in a pack train ahead of us.
Stopped for a Subway lunch break part way down. Saw a guy hand carrying a cat up from the Village. Enjoyed cooling off with the surprise Spring water along the way.
Reached Supai and visited with a friendly cat at the Sinyella Store, then hit the tourist office and had ice cream at the Supai Cafe.
As we left the Village, we picked up an escort dog who would lead us all the way to the campground, then come back to visit several times over the next couple days - loved him.
We got a great campsite on an island between two branches of the creek - only downside was the tent caterpillars who would constantly drop onto us and build little cocoons on anything left outside for long.
Next day we swam at Havasu Falls - water and air temps were perfect, and there were only about a dozen people there. Then we did the hike and climb down to Mooney Falls - one of the best parts of the trip. Next time we will definitely continue down creek at least to Beaver Falls.
Enjoyed another lovely night at the campsite, except I lost my headlamp - left it hanging in the bathroom when I changed clothes and it was gone five minutes later when I went back for it - grrr!
Breakfast at Supai Cafe was served by a very surly girl who almost got herself choked out by my friend. The hike out was long and boring - we agreed that next time we will take the helicoptor ride.
Amazing place, great trip - can't wait to return!
