What better way to get to 500 miles than with a long lost friend in town for a surprise visit. Maria has been a friend of mine since I moved to the Valley in 1981. We have many great memories and it's always fun to get together with her. Her son Jack, though preferring to ride horses at his grandparents, reluctantly joined us. Maria tells me he's very much interested in climbing so I let her know that I had a few climbing friends that maybe he could hook up with for next time.

Now to the hike, believe it or not two things: Maria was on time for the first time since I can remember  and second, it was nippy out there. I didn't want to do anything too long as Maria doesn't get to hike much in Calloway, GA due to her work schedule. But this trail is flat and lovely for the most part so I thot she would do okay and she did.

We enjoyed the terrain and the fat and happy saguaros. There were many bunnies out. Jack crawled around on a couple boulders but was out of site toward the end as Maria and I stopped to get close to the flora and check out the trappings of pack rats under a cholla.

We got some great moments of light though it was mostly overcast. There weren't too many folks out on the trail as we didn't start until 3 but we did encounter horseback riders and bikers.

Maria was duly impressed by the Trailhead's Visitors Center. Next it was on to visit with her parents who I enjoy as much as Maria. What a nice way to end 2013 :) . Happy New Year to you all and your families. May your hiking be filled with happiness and joy! :y:

For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.
