With a little help from my friends we did this section of AZT as key swap. They started at Pigeon Spring TH and we started at the lake. Hiking from the lake AZT starts at the bridge on Hwy 188 and climbs quickly to a ridgeline. Its about 6 miles and 2300' to Mills Ridge TH which you can drive to and do smaller loops instead of dealing with key swaps.
From Mills Ridge TH the steepness starts up the Four Peaks Trail #130 and continues about 4 miles until it levels out and starts contouring. Ran into our key swappers right about lunch time 12 miles into the hike. We took a nice break and enjoyed the scenery before heading our separate ways.
Last 7 miles of this hike is probably the nicest section. It continues to contour under the base of Four Peaks where we see the best views. Eventually the trail moves past Four Peaks and continues north towards the Pigeon Spring TH. There are several Ponderosa Pine sections that add to the scenery and a few creek crossing with water. Shake Tree Spring was flowing nicely and seems pretty reliable. There were also two other creek crossings with water but probably wouldn't depend on them. Shortly after those crossings the trail makes it's way over to Pigeon Spring which had some water and then the northern end of AZT #20.
Thanks Angela and Shawn for coordinating the key swap and vehicles
