Got in late last night. They kept the bar open for us; just one of the reasons Louisville and the Brown Hotel is probably my favorite overnight. Changed quickly and came back down the old elevator that had an operator back in the day. They were out of Eagle Rare, my favorite. But Henry, the grinning bartender behind the small but ancient carved bar at the far end of the classically ornate lobby, had other Bourbon suggestions. An hour later I pronounced him right about them all.

Slept in and then had a Hot Brown and strong coffee on the way out. You can't go wrong with bacon, turkey, grilled tomatoes, toast points, and whatever that creamy white sauce is on top. The doorman had on a thick overcoat and gloves with his top hat. "What can I do for you this morning, sir?" "Just going for a walk, maybe the River." Its cold out, sir." "Brisk, I think. Not cold." "As you wish, sir. Enjoy."

Set off up 4th past the Seelbach where Capone used to hide when Chicago got too hot. The Galt House where She stayed that time loomed on River's edge; a favorite with the jockeys when they come for the Derby.

The Ohio was brown and fat, full of runoff from a big winter showing between her banks. The Belle of Louisville was turning her paddle wheel but going no where. Mallards slept paired male and female in sunny places, beaks under wing. No River traffic and no one on the trail alongside it. No sign of Spring yet either, but it's just over there waiting.

The city's skyline got farther and its noise got less. Then I had to turn round.

"How was the walk, sir," as he held open the big door. "Good. Went down to the River." "Bet it was brisk, sir," he grinned. I like the Brown.
