The first waterfall is accessible by staying in the drainage and hiking maybe .3 miles. But the real hike is up a steep talus field on the right of the drainage (looking up). There is a trail, but parts of it can be rough and scrambly. Some of the Lower Six hadn’t figured out that poles are useless in areas like this and seemed to be intent on hurting themselves. They went up as far as the first technical climb in the vicinity of the second waterfall and turned back.
The climb up and right of the second fall is fairly technical and with a good bit of exposure. Kelly led us through it perfectly. From there it is pretty easy. Don’t miss the very small Anasazi granary on a cliff to your left on the way up. I would have totally missed it without Kelly stopping to grin at us and pointing it out.
The third waterfall is tucked into a very narrow curvy slot and is about 35 feet high. Some intrepid canyoneers had left an anchor above it. Would have loved to see their descent. We cooled off under the waterfall and had snacks before heading down to rejoin the group.
Thanks Kelly for sharing your favorite hike. |
