| no partners | | Needed some exercise so did this loop hike in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve starting up the north end Tom's Thumb Trail. It was a cool day so was able to keep up a good pace for me. Distant views were hazy due to the dust in the air from the winds this week. Not much in the way of wild flowers. The granite rock formations, especially through the Marcus Landslide area, were amazing as usual. Found a huge boulder to sit on while eating my lunch part way down the East End Trail with great views of Fountain Hills, the Four Peaks and Weaver's Needle. There weren't many people out hiking today - didn't encounter anyone after crossing over the saddle to the East End Trail until reaching the Marcus Landslide.
I spotted a wrecked car not far off the trail near the Marcus Landslide. I'm not sure how it got there with no visible roads nearby. Being an old gear head, I had to go investigate. It was a mid-1970s Camaro and had been completely stripped. It had been there many years based on the rust and bullet holes. An aftermarket high performance exhaust header was laying on the ground near the car. Must have been someone's hot rod at one time. The header had been cut off the engine with a torch when the car was stripped. Maybe it was a stolen car that got dumped here after it was stripped.
Got back to the trailhead at 3:30pm - there were only about a half dozen cars in the lot and rain clouds were moving in from the west. Hit a few rain sprinkles on the drive out. |
