There were 12 of us, including the Workshop Leader, Rich. He had scouted out the Canyon a couple of Weeks before and it was good to go. It was Overcast most of the Day and we were fairly high in Elevation so it was a little Chilly when you weren't moving. The Approach was approximately 2 Miles and it was for the most part Uphill, so of course, inevitably, I brought up the Rear... The Trail was in good shape, although the higher we got, the more Snow and Icy Spots we encountered...This came as a little bit of a surprise to Rich who had seen this Snow Free on his Scouting Trip...The Trail Slick Spots turned out to not be the big Surprise though.... I finally huffed my way to the Top of the Ridge and it truly was "The Top"...There was even a sign stating so....
After descending on the Ridge somewhat, we left the Trail and began the Drop into the Canyon. More Ice, Snow and Slick Spots that challenged in Spots, but then we were down to the Creek just before the 1st Rap. Geared up and got started. The first Rap Anchor was at the very Edge and you had to Hike down a Slope just to get to it...There was some Ice on the Slope and the Mud was pretty slippery in Spots, so we opted to Rope the Slope for assistance as one Slip could send you into an uncontrollable slide down the Slope and then over the Edge.
We were warned that we would get Wet, although there would be no Swimming. Just heavy Spray from the Waterfall at the first Rap and some Wading after that. I opted for a Shorty Wetsuit...Could have done the Full Suit as I got a little torn up and it was Chilly when we weren't moving...But, we never got Wet....
This was definitely different from any of the Canyons I've done before...It was very Cool (in more ways than one) and I definitely raised the Bar on my own Personal Pucker Factor.... I would definitely do this one again, it was a fun Canyon! Not sure if I would repeat this time of Year though, maybe just a tad later???
I'll let the Photos tell the rest of the Story...Belinda will have many more Photos than I have, I was gawking or concentrating too much to take Photos.... I'm pretty sure she's got a GPS Track of this Trip also, so I'll edit my Mileage and AEG later.
More Good Times in a Canyon! |
