this was plan B but as apropos since this area covered both of John's worlds: hiking and climbing. When I turned east on my drive, I could just barely make out one of the mountains of the McDowells; very dusty haze today.
The last time I was at the Thumb was with John in 2011. Somehow the climb up seemed easier when he was along :kf: .

I haven't been working out at the Club due to injury and I sure felt it as I struggled a bit  up the two hills to get to the flat stuff. Lots of people out on the trail as usual it seems. I did get to see a cardinal before my ascent so that was nice. The trail continues to be in good shape considering the extreme traffic it gets. Lots of people passed me but I actually passed a few too :o .

Thot I might catch up to Pam but she made a good pace today. She left at 8, I left at 8:20 as we wanted to not hold up the show for the other faster paced hikers who would take off some time after 9 and join us at 9:55. We had been waiting off to the side when we saw them arrive barreling up Tom's Thumb hill. We said our hellos before the rest of the group took off to the west of the Thumb.

I had to go down and retrieve my pack but on the way my boss's long-time girlfriend yelled my name. We had been at a client dinner the night before and knew each other was headed up this way so it was fun to run into her. (that's why I couldn't make Sirena's event; the first time in a decade that I've had to go to a client dinner (not that I minded as they are long time clients)

Eventually I joined the others who had started the celebration of John's life without me. Bob had brot up brews and snacks. We toasted the libations to John : king : and chatted for a bit before Bob, Joe and lil tortoise headed over to do a little climb in John's honor... Ironically at the place John and I had watched some climbers when we were here in 2011 (see it on the video from then as well as John doing some various climbing and hiking: http://youtu.be/9M6MYhYrwsw.) Well of course, I would need to film the guys as they made their attempt to at least master the first tier.

And then after rejoining with the others after that side venture, we were off and the boys thot they were race horses :wlift: as we barely saw them on the trail before we didn't. Pam and I took our time to smell the roses and such; it was a lovely morning.

We were having a grand ole time until we hit the top of the hill and were presented with two orange people and she in her short shorts with an exposed beer-like belly and sports bra. As soon as they were by Pam spun around with her eyes extra wide; didn't have to say a thing as I muttered "gross". It was just something we didn't need to see on this day or any day for that matter :yuck: :yuck: . Then we just started chuckling at the photo of the day that we missed :GB: .

We continued our hike down trying to brush that site from our minds. We did find a really large blooming prickly pear cactus that we took some photos of so that was a nice way to finish the johnr1 tribute hike.

Here is the video, mostly of the climbing: http://youtu.be/rqrYVYhXh6U
It gets confusing in one section cuz you think they're coming back down and then all of a sudden they're going back up  .

PS don't know why Scout II came up with 5 miles, I changed some settings based on an advice page but that's certainly not working so I'll start over AGAIN!

Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.
