| no partners | | This trip went nothing like planed. I was very excited to see Gilpin Lake. Since this is a loop with two mountain lakes and Gilpin was the most scenic I decided to do the loop south to north and hit Gilpin second. When I got to the trail head and the sign in sheet said the loop trail was not navigable because of snow pack, I don't know why I thought that wouldn't apply to me. This was the first mistake of many on maybe my scariest solo hike I have done.
I started up the Gold Creek trail and is was very chilly in the morning. At two miles I lost the trail because I didn't realize I had to cross a log to get over a creek. At mile three the trail went through a creek with very fresh snow melt, very cold on the feet. When I got 5 miles in the snow was covering the trail in parts. By mile 6 I could not longer see any trail in either direction (lost). I got very nervous when I fell through the snow pack with one leg on a part and realized there was a stream below me. I quickly figured out that if I fell all the way through on a deep part, they are not finding me for another few weeks. Decided I needed to turn pack.
This was not the best solo hike with this much snow pack. Would like to do it again sometime later in the year. |
