| no partners | | My uncle and I took a short hike on an old road that he and his brother had built years ago to access prime birch forest deep on his property. The Norwegian government paid them to clear the forest, they sold the firewood, and then the government paid them to plant trees on the land again. Seems like a sweet deal to me!
The road was built on an old hiking path that led to an old farm site where my aunt's grandparents were born. There is nothing left of the farm except for some stone foundations. My uncle built a cabin on one of the existing foundations, but it hasn't been used in years. In all my visits, I had never been here, so it was a neat little hike to get me out of the house for a while.
The views down into the Drangsfjord and across the Åptafjord were great and brought back many memories of times spent along their shores in years past. The weather was cloudy and humid, but the threats of rain stayed away all day. I had a great aunt who lived at the end of the fjord in Drange, and she always made us a delicious bean stew when we visited as kids.
Along our hike we strangely encountered a German couple on two occasions. The first time they darted off into the woods and the second time they were headed back out away from their car. My uncle remarked that they were too young to have been in the war. It was a sobering reminder to when Germans occupied Norway, and that in years past it was not uncommon for German tourists who had served as youth to seek out places where they had fought or taken shelter. Those days are generally over as the few remaining WWII vets are too old to be hiking in the mountains of Norway anymore. But thinking about those German soldiers returning to Norway and retracing some of their steps put the whole day in a different perspective for me. |
