| no partners | | Parked along 27th Ave north of Carefree Highway to access this group of peaks all by their lonesome in the NW corner of the Phoenix Sonoran Desert Preserve. Made a clockwise loop of 2080',2448',2353',and 2225' with a mix of off trail, old use trails, and even some newly spray-blazed routes that look like the Parks Department has been working on.
The northern two summits look like volcanic tuft and basaltic lava, but the southern two switch to granite, with some great sculpted forms resulting. The hiking was steep in places, but fairly open with annoying flora almost nonexistent. If it weren't for the road noise and the sprawl visible in almost every direction, this would be a prime bit of real estate.
Of course beating the crowds 12 minutes from my house isn't too shabby, and my earplugs worked just fine. |
