Then went off trail up the west side of the canyon to search a couple of benches for possible Indian ruins. I've been to the 6L Ranch site several times and always wondered about its history so I did some research. I was surprised to find out that the ranch was named for its original owner, the great grand father of HAZ member John 9L. Yes, his name was John 6L.
Found an old ranch trail that helped me get through the catclaw as I started the climb up the side of the canyon. Passed through 2 small benches with no sign of Indian ruins. Then I reached a much larger bench higher up on the side of the canyon and started seeing some pottery sherds. There were some rock piles in an area where I found the most and largest sherds but nothing like the village compounds that are scattered up and down this canyon. The pottery sherds were all red plain ware (no decoration) which is common in the Cave Creek ruins. There were great views of Skull Mesa on the east side of the canyon and the canyon bottom below. The bench is quite large and I didn't have time to do a thorough search - maybe next time. |
