While the sweeping views of the broad valley below and on up to the high Mazatzals and Four Peaks and the Superstitions are always fantastic, plant life is of course in its winter drab and disappointing. My last trip on this trail, in early April, proved one of the best hikes of the year. Lots of birds and wildflowers, blooming fairy dusters, brittlebush, cholla et al. This was MJ's first visit and, naturally, she thought it was a wonderful experience. I'll take her back here in March or April. One good thing. We saw only one other human all afternoon and none of the bikers that usually proliferate the area. I did the loop atop the landslide for the first time and likely will not do it again, it was so ordinary. Another good thing about hiking later than this, in late winter or early spring, is more sun exposure. In mid-afternoon today, most of the trail lay in mountain shadow and was coolish. |
