Consisted of turkey sandwiches and cranberry oatmeal bars amid the large jojoba field, finding respite from a hot sun in the shade of some boulders. Somebody got the blame for forgetting the carrot sticks. I've found over the years there is a thin line between forgetting and deliberate action. As we went up, passed a guy coming down. Said he been up to the "rocks" and turned back. He had gone on to the Falls a week ago and found them "dripping" but doubted theywere even wet today. He was right. Just the dark, dry stain on the rock. We got to our lonely car well after sunset. There were five other cars when we departed. Saw four hikers early on, but none for the last three hours -- hearing only voices in the distance. Beats hiking in the busy urban parks on Thanksgiving. Beautiful day, shot a zillion photos, of which I hope at least a couple were worth the effort. We've hiked nearly every Thanksgiving since 1986 when we went up to the amethyst mine beneath Four Peaks and ate while looking out toward Phoenix, which was typically lost in haze. |
