| no partners | | Started out from Five Tables TH at 1440 and returned at 1724 with a beautiful sunset behind me. Disappointed I didn't see any wildlife except a small hawk that flew within 30 feet of me as I ate a sandwich on top of Goat. Figured with the Summit Rd still closed and no traffic by vehicle and only a little by foot, I would come across some javelina. No such luck. Wondered if I might have the trail to myself, and was surprised to run into four hikers and a jogger. The jogger was moving along the National Tr and came up to Goat as I was coming down. Later saw him headed in the opposite direction, to the west. Lots of flowering brittlebush and globemallow still hanging in there. I've hiked to Goat several times but this marked only my second trip via the Ranger Tr, the other time being last Feb 4. The Ranger is now one of my favorites in SM Park with nice contours and only a few switchbacks and steep enough to provide a good workout. And coming down you have great views of downtown Phoenix and the Valley to the east. |
