It was 101 about 5:30 pm when I left Hayden traveling east on the north side of the canal, thinking there would not be much to see in this, the waning moments of summer heat. I was wrong. Even beside the beautiful sunlit thunderclouds coming in from the Superstitions, an abundance of wildlife, mostly birds, met my eyes.

While seeing few waterfowl except for maybe 20 young mallards which I figured were too small to make the summer migration north with parents, poor things left behind to grown up fast, I discovered three large flocks of red-winged blackbirds. To watch them fly off together, particularly the coal-black males with the red and yellow shoulder patches, was wonderful. Also ran across a large number of other blackbirds and doves. Most of the latter were white-wings with a smattering of ringed-necks, Incas and mournings

Gambel's quail and Harris squirrels came out of the scrub of mesquite and palo verde that lay between the canal and the snaking fairway of the Scottsdale Silverado Golf Club. I eventually came to a wide cement path as I neared the car and pedestrian bridge at Pima Road. It was flat as can be and ran about a quarter of a mile. I dubbed it The Runway, believing a small plane in trouble could easily land there.

On the return trip, I added a new bird to my life list as I passed a pond near Pima. Two little stilts, maybe 6-8 inches in length, worked the stagnant water with three young mallards. I believe the two strangers were migrating Solitary Sandpipers. They had a dark upper body with little white specks, a white belly and dark breast, olive-green legs and the tell-tale white eye-ring.

It was good to be hiking in Arizona again. My last in-state outing was May 31 at North Mountain Park.
